Painting Perceptions of Identity
Title: Abyss Size: 60.96 cm x 91.44 cm Medium: Acrylic painting on canvas Completion: December 2022 Exhibition Text This painting serves as a representation of my thoughts and feelings on the expectations that the average woman is pressured to live up to. These expectations come from a society primarily driven by male ideals. While extreme levels of misogyny may not be as prevalent today, they still exist and remain impactful nonetheless. "Abyss" is heavily inspired by pioneers of the Surrealism movement Rene Magritte and Salvador Dali. I found their distortion and reimagined versions of the female figure to be very compelling, and I felt a desire to link such odd visuals to the dangers of the objectification of women. My depiction of women is used as commentary regarding how they may be perceived by men, and how male perception may lead a women to question her own identity and self worth. |
