Title: The Family Medium: Ink, alcohol-based markers, colored pencil Size: 25.4 x 35.56 cm Completion: February, 2023 Exhibition Text The Family is a two-part illustration meant to playfully contrast a simple, wholesome scene with one that is chilling and grotesque. To do this, I created an initial illustration of a happy, stereotypical nuclear family enjoying breakfast together, but then took that same frame to create another part of the illustration in which the same family are in some sort of clearly altered, demented state. The zombie-like, rotten and deadpan nature of the second half of the illustration was done with the intention of shocking the viewer, as it sucks out any warm feelings evoked from the pleasantness of the first half. The objects and scenery shown are inspired by artists Zinaida Serebriakova, as well as Ilya Mashkov's beautiful depictions of simple joys in life, which I ultimately used to branch out for my own concept. |
